Roberto Rancilio started the company in Parabiago, just outside Milan, in 1927. Almost a hundred years later, the factory is still there, the family name is still on the machines, and Rancilio sits in the middle of the Italian commercial espresso market — not flashy, not specialty-positioned, but a workhorse brand that quietly ended up under the counter at a huge number of restaurants, bakeries, hotel banquet rooms and neighborhood cafés.
The commercial range is the Classe lineup. Classe 5 is the entry — single boiler, clean industrial design, the practical choice for restaurant counters and smaller cafés where total daily volume is moderate. The Classe 7 moves you up to a heavier daily driver — same single-boiler architecture with Rancilio's Steady Brew thermosiphon, which is the thermal stability story for this range. The Classe 9 is the high-volume version with a bigger boiler and three configurations, including the Classe 9 RE with a mechanical lever group if you want manual pre-infusion. The Kryo 65 is the matched grinder.
Outside the commercial side, Rancilio is best known in the US for the Silvia home machine — but that's a different conversation. On the bar, Rancilio's argument is reliability, decent thermal stability for a single-boiler architecture, and parts that any commercial coffee technician in the country has worked on.
